The Director, Monitoring Compliance and Enforcement, Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA), Mr. Kayode Bello, has advised residents to show more interest in ensuring a clean and sustainable environment.

He said to reduce climate change effects and global warming; there should be collective effort by Nigerians, especially in managing wastes and curbing environmental pollution.

Speaking at the launch of ‘Trash for Gas Campaign’ organised by Smart Gas foundation in Odi-Olowo/Ojuwoye local council in Lagos, he stated that stakeholders need to promote waste to wealth initiatives, recycle products and make jobs easy for others in value chains of production.

The Chief Executive Officer, Smart Gas, Dr. Yinka Opeke, warned that unclean environments create spaces for germs leading to infections and health related challenges for the people. Opeke observed that as a nation, Nigerians face environmental challenges that constantly threaten the living conditions of the people.

“In Lagos State for instance, we have felt the devastating impact of flooding in the rainy season. While there are other factors responsible for this, a contributing factor is blockage of drainage systems, caused by the indiscriminate dumping of trash within our communities.

“We know some of us think the government has the sole responsibility of ensuring we live in a clean environment but our environment is our collective responsibility and we must be intentional about how we take care of it because when we do, we are the first beneficiaries of a safer and healthier community,” she said.
Chairman, Odiolowo/Ojuwoye LCDA, Mr. Rasaq Ajala, appreciated the organisers for partnering towards promoting a clean environment.

No fewer than 650 families benefited from the project. The beneficiaries were given tools including hand gloves and nylons to separate the recycling materials in exchange for a 3kg filled gas cylinder.
