The National Chairman, Nigerian Institution of Environmental Engineers (NIEE), Sesan Odukoya has called for the deployment of local content in engineering services to solve environmental challenges facing the country.

He stated this during his investiture as the new chairman of the association in Lagos.

According to him, professional engineers are saddled with the responsibility of ensuring a healthy environment and sustainable living for humanity, hence there is a need for partnership with the government to provide solutions to fossil fuel emissions, flooding, indiscriminate disposal of waste and climate change.

He noted that most of the wastes generated across the country could be used to produce wealth if public awareness on it, were taken seriously.

“Waste could be a good resource if properly harnessed and it has engineering solutions to convert them to useful materials. We only need to develop and design the right equipment. We can develop equipment locally, and it is time for the government to engage local engineers effectively. All hands must be on deck to provide solutions to environmental problems as most of these problems are man-made and can be resolved.”

He added environmental engineers are key players in restoring the ecosystem in the country, stressing that the association as a division of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) was established to provide solutions to environmental issues by employing current and emerging technologies, equipment and procedures.
