Reps seeks ecological intervention in Anambra communities
Disturbed by the magnitude of ecological deterioration of his constituency, the member representing Anaocha, Njikoka and Dunukofia Federal Constituency in Anambra State, Val Ayika has urged the federal government to declare the constituency as an ecological disaster zone.
Ayika who made the call after concluding his three-day familiarization of active and dormant gully erosion sites, lamented that all the 22 communities that make up the constituency are in threat of landslides. He bemoaned the high level of destruction of the built environment, farmlands and cultural sites in the constituency, stressing that, if the ugly scenario was not adequately checked, most communities in the constituency would be washed away.
The lawmaker said that the magnitude of the degradation was mind-boggling and beyond the capacity of the state government.Ayika urged both the federal government and international development partners to come to the rescue of his constituency to avert both environmental and human tragedy.
The lawmaker, who said the tour was part of his campaign promises, said his next move is to attract the sympathy of his colleagues in the lower house to capture ecological fund in the 2020 budget in order to tackle the menace.According to him, the visit was an eye opener and afforded him opportunity to grasp the reality of what the constituents have been passing through over the years. He said: “There is no community in the entire 22 communities that constitute Anaocha, Njikoka and Dunukofia Federal Constituency of Anambra State that is not adversely affected by either or both active and dormant erosion.”
“They are getting deeper and wider. The point is that the active erosion sites keep deteriorating and threatening to swallow the villagers with their farmlands, cultural sites and buildings. “It is important that federal government come to the rescue of my constituents and save them from human and environmental degradation.I call on the federal government to declare my constituency an environmental disaster area”, he added.
