Last year, when Alpha Ojini dropped Tears Are Salty For A Reason, it was an exciting reminder of why the multi-talented artiste is among the few rap prodigies making a difference within the Nigerian music scene.
With four compilation sound pieces, the rapper, singer, and professional sound engineer has long surfaced among rap circles as a brilliant storyteller whose cadence, intimate storytelling and sonic melodies help to create intriguing experiences for listeners.
Now, with his latest release, dubbed Vigilante Bop, Ojini returns to the scoreboards of Hip-Hop, making a strong case against corrupt governance and police brutality. Tag-teaming with the Abuja-based Drill maverick, Odumodublvck, Ojini serves an introspective, energetic and groovy bop that would make Hip Hop pioneers and enthusiasts proud.
“I remember doing this song back in 2019. I was going to put it out in 2020, but I didn’t want to, because I didn’t want it to seem that I was riding on the #EndSARS situation for clout.
These are deep issues, and I wanted to drop it at the right time,” Ojini tells Weekend Beats.
“In fact, the day I sent the song to Odumodublvck to record his own verse, he had just been locked up in the police station the night before. So, all that anger and rage was very much in him, and he poured it into the song. I even had to trim some parts out, because it was very intense.”
After fellow rap maverick/activists such as Eedris Abdulkareem, Falz, among others, have thrived with their socio-conscious art, there is no doubt that Ojini’s records would do the same. The former mathematics teacher cum musician continues to weave his brilliance into his music, simplifying the myriad complexities of life into witty bars, smooth flows and groovy instrumentation.
Vigilante Bop is out across all platforms.
