Styling dudes in Ankara shorts

Nigerian men are also making their imprints in the fashion world. They are stepping up their game in this area, by trying to look their best.

The idea is to effortlessly achieve that irresistible, suave and masculine look. They, therefore, go for fabrics and styles that will express their personal tastes. One of such fabrics is Ankara. Designers have learned to make creative and lovely styles with this African print. And unlike the female folk who make beautiful whole outfits with this exotic fabric, men are embracing the Ankara shorts because it makes them feel comfortable and simple. The nice thing about Ankara shorts is that, though it can be worn on formal occasions, when paired with appropriate tops, men can also wear it when hanging out with friends and families, at amusement parks, picnics or even while relaxing at home.

The Chief executive Officer/Creative director, Ethereal Couture, Olalekan Oladele, explained that Ankara, also known as Wax Print, is a colourful, evergreen and resilient fabric commonly worn in West Africa.

He said: “The process to make the wax print is originally influenced by batik, an Indonesian (Javanese) method of dyeing cloth by using wax-resist techniques. Ankara comes in different patterns, grades, and prices that appeal to every pocket.

“In Nigeria of the past, Ankara was regarded as clothing meant for rural and unsophisticated people, but this perception has changed in recent times. Ankara is now proudly worn by people of every social status and in sophisticated designs.

“One Ankara design that stands out is the Ankara shorts stylishly worn by both men and women. Ankara shorts are comfortable and versatile pieces that can be paired with T-shirts, Polo shirts, dress shirts or even the Ankara shirt with the same shorts.”

Tips on how to rock Ankara shorts
If you’re not wearing a matching Ankara top with your shorts, go for tops with plain colours to give your look a harmonious contrast.

• The length of your Ankara shorts should be around your knees. Anything much shorter makes it look like underwear and anything longer gives a clumsy look.

• Your Ankara shorts should not be too tight or too baggy. It should be smart but with enough allowance for ease of movement.

• Ankara shorts can be paired with a wide array of footwear, such as Palm slippers, sandals, shoes, half-shoes, loafers and sneakers. When pairing with sneakers, it is advisable to pair your shorts with Polo shirts or T-shirts.
