Easter, also called Resurrection Sunday, or Paschal is one of the most important days of the Christian faith. It comes as important as the Christmas celebration. It is also one of Nigerians most popular public holidays.

Easter commemorates the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, according to the New Testament.

The Easter Triduum or Paschal Triduum starts on the evening of Maudy Thursday with the Last Super continuing through Good Friday and the cruxification and burial of Jesus Christ and ending on Easter Sunday with prayers and celebrations of the Resurrection. The day is the beginning of Eastertide, which ends at Ascension and the end of Lent, the 40 days of fasting which started on Ash Wednesday ending on holy or Gloria Saturday.

The Holy Week Starting on Palm Sunday through to the Gloria Saturday. Easter is a joyful occasion commemorating Christ’s victory over death and his ascension into heaven to take his place at the right hand of the father. It is also a time of celebration, feasting, singing and dancing and drumming.
The eight days between Palm Sunday and Easter Sunday are known as the Holy Week. They include Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Gloria Saturday. That week is also called the Passion (of Christ) Week. It comes at the end of the 40 days period dedicated to fasting, prayer and penance and contemplation known as Lent. For Nigerian Christians, Easter observances start on Palm Sunday. When the service is over believers stream out into the streets in processions waving home-made palm branches and crosses, dancing and singing.

On Good Friday some Christian communities abstain from eating meat because it was the day Jesus Christ made the supreme sacrifice to go and die on the cross for our sins. They eat dishes prepared with fish and seafood instead.

The churches that were devoid of decorations are now filled with beautiful floral arrangements. On Easter Monday, the tradition is for outdoor celebrations going for picnics, fun fares and various kinds of social parties that had to be on hold during the somber Lenten period, now take place during the Easter holidays.

Floral decorations feature prominently in these events, the venues such as places of worship, weddings receptions, in the homes and outdoor venues, such as garden parties. Also personal floral bouquets are made for personal accessories and to give out as gifts. It is time of jollity and festivities because the Redeemer lives.
