How Nollywood Movies Encourage Money Ritual
T4T was watching a rather long Nollywood movie on Pay TV, on Monday night. Titled Blood For Riches, the movie starred Ebere Okaro and Diamond Okechi, among others.
The main character, Tony, was frustrated after having his business capital stolen. He met a lady friend who mischievously introduced him to a money ritual cult. He became rich but at the price of sacrificing three newborn babies and two of his nieces. And when his victims started tormenting him, with his fellow cult members after his life too, a pastor miraculously saved him, but asked him to look for the relatives of his victims he took their lives and apologise to them. That he did, and all was well. End of the movie!
First, the official(s) of the National Film and Video Censors Board who screened the movie and okayed it for public consumption should be summoned to Oshodi under bridge to explain to market women and men why he gave it a clean bill to be distributed.
Now, in a society being ravaged by young boys eager to go to a night club to spray money and be hailed by Hype Men, drive expensive cars, and are consequently engaging in money ritual, which they call “Yahoo Plus,” tell T4T why they would not be buoyed by a movie such as Blood For Riches? A movie in which a mass murderer got away with the act because a Pastor came to his rescue! So, Nigerian pastors now play the role of the courts, because for a confessed mass killer to have his sins forgiven by the pastor because he apologised to the victim’s families; the police were not called and the film did not end with him paying for his crimes with his life, or going to prison…this is the problem T4T has with all these Nollywood movies!
Zazzu Entertainer, Not Moralist
A lot of bad energy trailed the performance of Afro Pop artist, Portable aka Zazzu at the closing event of the just concluded Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Annual Conference.
The weird singer in a viral video was seen climbing the scaffolding of the stage almost to the apex and dancing wildly from that dangerous position. And then the dam broke. Trust the ever-vibrant Nigerian moral policemen, they were quick to question why Zazzu of all artistes, was chosen to headline a show for Lawyers! And the question T4T asked was, should the lawyers have gone for a gospel singer instead? Maybe a Mercy Chinwo or any of the others?
Nigerians and pretence. A concert is not a religious gathering, so condemning Zazzu and or the NBA for featuring the artiste is the height of hypocrisy. The same people casting the first stone are the ones secretly watching porn videos loaded on their mobile phones with earpieces.
BURNA BOY: Cut Patrick Doyle Some Slack
LAST week, veteran Nollywood actor, Patrick Doyle, literally shook the hornet’s nest when he publicly said on his official Facebook page that rave of the moment Afro pop star, “Burna Boy, has done nothing by himself that can be remotely described as great”.
This statement did not go down well with fans of the artiste world wide, made up of young people. And trust, they tore well into Doyle’s flesh both on and offline. But of the truth, the actor said nothing new.
His Facebook post read, “The credit for the feats that appear to be puffing the likes of Burna Boy up have to be properly ascribed to the greats who cleared the thorny paths that have created pathways for his likes to walk through practically effortlessly. Burna Boy has not by himself done anything that can be remotely described as great. He and his peers are recipients of the labours of heroes past. They need to be humble and respectful of their diligent and truly pioneering predecessors. Great artistes like Sunny Ade, Fela Anikulapo, Majek Fashek, I. K. Dairo, and a galaxy of others who paved the way from the 60s, to the 2000s. Greatness and great feats don’t exist in a vacuum.”
Patrick Doyle was not nice at all in his last line. “Let us not contribute to the creation of an arrogant and obnoxious monster.”
Indeed, the “obnoxious arrogance” of Burna Boy and some of his colleagues is truly offensive and one can understand why Patrick Doyle became this angry to speak out. But will he listen to him? From the reactions of Burna Boy’s fans, he obviously will not.
