In a major step towards revitalising Cross River State’s aviation and tourism sectors, Governor Bassey Edet Otu has taken delivery of two new Bombardier CRJ1000 aircraft, each with a capacity of up to 100 passengers.
The delivery, which took place at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, marks a significant milestone in the state’s efforts to enhance connectivity and improve socioeconomic mobility.
The event was attended by dignitaries, including the governor’s wife, Bishop Eyoanwan Otu, and former Minister of Culture and Tourism, High Chief Edem Duke.
Describing the acquisition as “a long-overdue leap into the future of seamless connectivity and economic transformation,” Governor Otu emphasised the importance of reliable air transportation to the success of the state’s tourism-driven development strategy.
“These aircraft are more than machines—they are catalysts of commerce, bridges of culture, and vessels of hope,” he said.
The aircraft are expected to address the persistent issues of flight delays and cancellations that have long plagued travellers to and from Calabar.
Initially, the state government plans to operate the aircraft through a partnership with ValueJet Airline, pending the acquisition of an Air Operator Certificate (AOC) to function as an independent carrier.
The initiative is designed to strengthen investor confidence and open up new opportunities across various sectors, including hospitality, agriculture, conferences, and export.
Former Minister Edem Duke hailed the development as a “game-changing intervention,” commending Governor Otu’s visionary leadership.
He noted that the move will significantly improve Calabar’s accessibility, positioning the state as a more attractive destination for tourism and investment.
The official commissioning of the aircraft by the Federal Ministry of Aviation is scheduled for August 12, 2025.
