Organiser and promoters of the Headies Awards, one of Nigeria’s most coveted prizes in music, the Headies Academy, led by its founder cum Executive Producer, Ayo Animashaun, has called on Federal Government to support the show.

Animashaun made the call in an interview with Arise TV, while explaining reasons behind taking the awards ceremony to Atlanta, Georgia in United States of America, where the15th and 16th editions were held. He added that the decision was what saved the awards from what appeared to be an impending doom.

“If we didn’t take this award out of Nigeria, it would have died,” Animashaun revealed.

Last week, the Headies Academy announced that the award would be returning to Nigeria for its 17th edition after it two consecutive editions in the U.S.

Animashaun said that the decision to return the award show to Nigeria was motivated by the plea of Nigerians who demanded that the ceremony be returned to the country.

“I realised when you are doing something for the people and it’s a sacrifice and not for yourself, you have to listen to the people. They said they wanted the awards back home,” he said, whilst calling on the government to support the award show.

He stated that in the last two years, the Headies has received support from the US embassy in Nigeria, which hosted them to parties and also granted visas to Nigerians to attend the event.

It needs to be noted that in almost two decades of the awards, the Headies has grown to become Nigeria’s most popular music award, which has contributed to the advancement and celebration of Nigerian music.
