In the past week, the hashtag #DearFatherPlay has surged across Twitter and TikTok, driven by The SUMI Group’s trailer release of the stage production Dear Father, a gripping exploration of love, sacrifice, and generational trauma that sheds light on the crucial role of fathers in shaping their daughters’ lives.
Set against the harrowing reality of rising cases of femicide, especially in the United Kigdom and the role of men in addressing gender-based violence. The stage play marks the first time a chapter from The SUMI Writers’ Àtẹ́wọ́ Collection — a part of the Invisible Hands catalogue that has been in the making for over 30 years — will be brought to life on stage.
Directed by Feyifunmi Ogini, Mofe Duncan and Abimbola Komolafe, Dear Father tells the poignant story of Adenike, a daughter who begins to question the sacrifices her father made for her. The 70 minutes play highlights the complex father-daughter dynamics and sheds light on pressing social issues.
As the play goes on stage in London from June 12 to 14, it promises to captivate audiences with its emotional depth and socially relevant message. Other cast members include Akin Lewis, Kunle Remi, Ronke Ojo alias Ronke Oshodi Oke, Tobi Bakre, Idia Aisien, Mike Edwards, and Tomi Ojo.
