AJEGUNLE musicians and the wider Nigerian music community will tomorrow celebrate the life and enduring legacy of John Aigbokhan Oboh, popularly known as Mighty Mouse, the pioneer widely regarded as the “Father of AJ Music.”
The gathering is expected to bring together artistes, producers, creatives, family members and members of the Ajegunle community to honour a man whose influence extended far beyond his own recordings. The celebration comes at a time when there are growing calls for greater documentation of Nigeria’s musical heritage.

Mighty Mouse, who died on September 18, 2023, played a foundational role in the development of AJ Music, a sound that emerged in the late 1980s and early 1990s from Ajegunle, with influences from Edo Esan samba, reggae, jazz, and other African rhythms.
More than a music producer, he was a renowned DJ, a mentor, innovator, experimenter, teacher, benefactor, and above all, an artiste who believed in the power of his own dream, which helped take the sound to the Nigerian mainstream industry.

The result of his incorporation of reggae and dancehall with African rhythms and local expressions to develop a sound that reflected the realities and identity of Ajegunle was a distinctive musical culture that eventually produced some of the most recognisable street sounds and personalities in Nigerian popular music.
Mighty Mouse may be gone, but the sound he helped create continues to live through the artistes he mentored, the music he produced and the Ajegunle community that still calls him its musical father. His Jahoha Studio was an important creative centre for musicians, producers and engineers, especially youths who were given opportunities to learn, experiment and develop their craft.

Speaking about the celebration, his sister, Mabel Oboh, described the late composer as the “undisputed father of Ajegunle music”, recalling his determination to take the sound beyond the community where it originated. She also highlighted his collaborations and experiments with other musical traditions, including an Afro-Celtic project with Piper Norman.
“We are honouring John Aigbokhan Oboh, popularly known as Mighty Mouse, the man we proudly call the Father of Ajegunle Music. We are not only celebrating him as the man who created a sound; we are celebrating him as the man who created opportunities for people.
“We are not simply remembering a great musician and producer, but honouring a man whose creative vision changed the musical identity of an entire community. Those of us who were young musicians around Mighty Mouse miss him deeply.

“We miss his voice; we miss his ideas. We miss the way he could hear something in a piece of music that the musician had not yet discovered. Most importantly, we miss the father figure behind the music,” she said.
“Mighty Mouse understood that talent does not always come with money. He therefore created a space where young musicians, producers, engineers and aspiring artists could learn, experiment and develop their abilities. His studio was not simply a place where people came to record and leave. It became a place of learning and opportunity.
“Many people who could not afford professional studio time were given opportunities to record, learn and develop. His generosity helped create a generation of musicians and music professionals. That is one part of his legacy that must never be forgotten,” Oboh added.

While Ajegunle became synonymous with the energetic sounds, artistes such as Daddy Showkey, Daddy Fresh, Baba Fryo, and Marvellous Benji passed through that environment. The story of the movement cannot be separated from Mighty Mouse, whose approach was rooted in experimentation.
As contemporary Nigerian music continues to gain global recognition, and the stories of earlier movements such as AJ Music risk being overshadowed by more recent Afrobeats success stories, Mighty Mouse’s legacy offers a reminder that today’s global Nigerian sound was built on decades of experimentation, community and grassroots creativity.
