For those who knew the DJ, musician and mentor, John Aigbokhan Oboh, popularly known as Mighty Mouse, his story demonstrates how creativity and determination can transform a community.

From his studio in Ajegunle, Oboh helped nurture a musical movement whose influence extended beyond the community and shaped the careers of generations of Nigerian artistes.

Saturday, August 29, 2026, the world celebrated the life and enduring contribution of this late producer at the maiden Mighty Mouse Legacy Concert in Lagos.

The event, which attracted musicians, producers, creatives, community leaders and members of the Ajegunle music community, was organised to honour Oboh, who was widely described by colleagues and admirers as a pioneer and father of Ajegunle music.

Speaking at the event, Ehiguese Daddy Hyde, a prominent figure in Nigeria’s reggae and dancehall community and one of the organisers, said the concert was aimed at celebrating Mighty Mouse not only for his musical achievements but also for the opportunities he created for young people.

“We are not only celebrating the man who created a sound. We are celebrating the man who created opportunities for people,” Hyde said.

Mighty Mouse emerged during a period when Ajegunle was becoming a major centre of grassroots popular music in Lagos. He developed a distinctive musical style that blended African rhythms, Edo Esan samba, reggae, jazz, local percussion and contemporary sounds.

His Jahoha Studio in Ajegunle became an important centre for the development of the emerging Ajegunle music movement.

Beyond recording music, the studio provided an environment where young artistes, producers, engineers and other aspiring creatives could acquire skills and develop their talents.

Organisers said several artistes associated with the rise of Ajegunle music, including Daddy Showkey, Daddy Fresh, Baba Fryo and Marvellous Benji, among others, were connected to the creative environment built around Mighty Mouse.

His contribution, they noted, therefore, went beyond producing records, as he helped create an ecosystem that gave young people the opportunity to discover their abilities and pursue careers in music.

Friday Obianu, popularly known as Prof Linkin, whose hit song “I Don Jogodo” enjoyed significant airplay in the early 2000s, described Mighty Mouse as a generous and influential figure who helped artistes overcome financial barriers.

Obianu, who said Mighty Mouse mastered his popular song, recalled that the late producer frequently created opportunities for upcoming musicians who could not afford professional studio sessions.

According to him, Mighty Mouse ensured that lack of money did not prevent young musicians from recording and developing their musical ideas.

“Without him, we would not have the opportunity to be in the studio to produce our own songs,” he said.

Veteran musician Friday Igwe, popularly known as Baba Fryo, described him as a hardworking man who contributed significantly to the growth of artistes and producers in Ajegunle.

He described Oboh as a revolutionary who used music to speak against oppression and advocate for the people, saying his death represented the loss of an important figure in the Nigerian music industry.

Chairman of the Performing Musicians Employers’ Association of Nigeria, PMAN, Ajegunle Chapter, Bright John Odede, popularly known as Sir Boj, said the concert was established to keep Mighty Mouse’s vision alive.

Odede described Oboh as not only the founder of Ajegunle music but also a freedom fighter who used his music to challenge injustice and advocate freedom.

Mighty Mouse’s wife, dancehall artiste, Chinyere Oboh, popularly known as Lady Sege, also described her late husband as a dedicated producer who helped numerous artistes develop their careers.

She urged musicians in Ajegunle to remain resilient and “keep the fire burning,” noting that many artistes emerged from her husband’s studio.

Oboh died on September 18, 2023, at the age of 56 after battling cancer. His voice may have fallen silent, but the musical legacy he built continues to resonate.
