Tonye Ukpong is the Managing Director of Total Health Trust Limited, a health maintenance organization within the Tangerine Group. She is a seasoned executive with more than twenty three years of professional experience across the banking and healthcare sectors, known for her strong leadership, strategic discipline, and commitment to organizational growth.
She is a Member of the Chartered Institute of Directors Nigeria and a Fellow of the Health and Managed Care Association of Nigeria. She is also a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Economist of Nigeria. Her professional qualifications include certification as a Systems Auditor and a Certified Retail Banker. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science and Mathematics.
Tonye began her career in the banking sector, where she spent over two decades building extensive experience across corporate, commercial, and retail banking. At Diamond Bank Plc she held several strategic roles covering operations, branch management, and regional management. These responsibilities strengthened her expertise in operational efficiency, team leadership, and business growth.
She later served as Regional Sales Manager for Rivers State at Access Bank, where she led regional sales operations and supported market expansion across key territories. Her time in banking exposed her to complex business environments and prepared her for high level strategic leadership.
A defining period in her career came when she was entrusted with acting branch leadership responsibilities during her banking years. The assignment required her to step into a role outside her immediate area of specialization. Through deliberate learning and disciplined execution she quickly mastered the role and successfully guided teams who had long operated within that function. The experience reshaped her understanding of leadership and reinforced the importance of influence, stewardship, and continuous personal growth.
In 2021 she transitioned into the healthcare sector and joined Avon Healthcare Limited as Group Head of Sales and Business Development. In that role she drove nationwide sales expansion, supported the development of innovative healthcare products, and strengthened strategic partnerships across several key markets within Nigeria’s health insurance industry.
Her exposure to healthcare delivery deepened her appreciation for the direct impact that access to quality healthcare has on families and communities. This experience strengthened her commitment to lead with purpose while pursuing operational excellence and industry transformation.
In 2024 Tonyeassumed office as Managing Director of Total Health Trust Limited. Since taking the helm she has led the organization through a period of transformation focused on innovation, stronger governance systems, and technology driven processes that improve operational efficiency and customer experience.
Her leadership approach reflects years of experience managing complex portfolios and turning around challenging business environments. Earlier in her banking career she was often assigned to regions that required restructuring and strategic direction. She explained that being a wife and mother while advancing through the corporate ranks required discipline, resilience, and a strong support system. The experience strengthened her conviction that women can lead at the highest levels while remaining committed to their personal and family values.
“I hope my journey serves as encouragement to other women that it is possible to pursue ambition and family life with excellence and purpose,” she said.
She also acknowledged the role of those closest to her in making that balance possible. According to her, her husband and children remain her strongest support system.
