Former international, Duke Udi, has expressed excitement with the confirmation of the 2021/22 Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL) kickoff date. The league is expected to begin on December 17.

Speaking to The Guardian, yesterday, Udi said the notification for the start of the league should excite every football lover, adding that it should also be shown on the TV for the world to see.

“I am very excited that a date has now been fixed for the kick off of the league. This is what we have all been looking forward to hearing that the league will resume on a fixed date.

“We also want the league to return to television; that is our prayers so that everyone can watch it all over the world and through that, our league can also grow. I hope it will take off on the date planned,” he said, adding that the league’s absence affected clubs that featured in CAF competitions.

“There is a lot of politics in the continent as far as football in Africa is concerned, especially the North Africans, who run their leagues the same time with the Europeans.

“That is why they always do better than us each time we meet them because we are usually not well prepared to face them.”

Clubs’ preparatory matches cannot be equated with proper football games where teams play week in, week out, for players’ total fitness.

“Playing a team in league season is a different ball game and that is why many of the countries, whose leagues are in session have advantage over us. We just pray that Enyimba will do well in the return leg of the Confederation Cup,” he said.
