Ajanah Inter-council Basketball Competition good for national teams, says Oyedeji

Former captain of the national Basketball team, D’Tigers, Olumide Oyedeji has described the annual Ajanah Inter-local Council Basketball Championship as one of the best things to happen to the sport in Nigeria.

Speaking at the 10th edition of the competition, Oyedeji said about 60 players in the quasi-premier basketball league and about 18 in continental premier league were groomed from the competition.

He also said about 45 players in Division One and about 25 players in Division Two are all offshoots of the Ajanah Annual Inter-Council Championship.

The 10th annual Ajanah Championship, which is sponsored by the Kogi State Chief Judge, Justice Nasiru Ajanah, is billed to hold from December 27 at Okene Local Council in Kogi State.

According to the secretary of the Main Organising Committee for the tournament, Mr. Ajibarade Bello, who unveiled the championship trophy and jersey, said over 13 local council areas will participate in the tournament.

Bello disclosed that the objectives of the event include promotion of unity and peaceful co-existence amongst youths in the state, as well as development of basketball in state, as well as identifying and exposing talents, development of sports facilities and positive engagement of youths during festive periods, amongst others.

According to him, “A prize money of N1 million and trophies would be given to outstanding players at the end of the tournament.
