Formula 1: Brila Media CEO Debbie Izamoje Okolie joins African sports leaders in Rwanda

Debbie Izamoje Okolie

Debbie Izamoje Okolie, Chief Executive Officer of Brila Media, was among a select group of African sports delegates invited to Kigali, Rwanda, for a significant engagement marking a new chapter in the continent’s sporting history, as Formula 1 officially announced its return to Africa through a 10-year agreement with Rwanda.

The landmark announcement, which will see the Formula 1 African Grand Prix join the championship calendar in the early 2030s, was made in the presence of Rwandan President Paul Kagame, FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem and Formula 1 President and CEO Stefano Domenicali.

Okolie’s invitation placed her among a select group of African sports stakeholders at a pivotal moment for the continent’s sports industry, as conversations increasingly shift from hosting major competitions to building the commercial, media and talent ecosystems needed to sustain them.

The engagement also provided an opportunity to examine Rwanda’s five-year sports strategy and its broader ambitions for positioning sport as a driver of investment, tourism, economic development and international visibility.

For Okolie, the significance extends beyond Formula 1 itself.

As CEO of Brila Media, a Nigerian sports media organisation with more than two decades of experience, she brings a perspective shaped by sports broadcasting, digital content, audience development and commercial partnerships. Her participation comes at a time when African media organisations have an opportunity to play a more active role in shaping how global sporting properties engage the continent’s growing audiences.

Formula 1’s return creates a significant opening for African sports media: to build awareness of motorsport, develop new audiences, tell stories about emerging talent, attract brand investment and connect fans to opportunities across the wider motorsport ecosystem.

The challenge will be to ensure that the value generated by a major international event extends beyond race weekend. This includes developing local expertise, creating opportunities for businesses, investing in participation and building a media presence that sustains interest throughout the year.

For African media, this represents an opportunity to move beyond reporting on major sporting milestones to helping build the audiences, partnerships and commercial narratives that make those milestones valuable.

Okolie’s participation reflects the importance of bringing African media leadership into conversations about the future of sport, particularly as countries across the continent explore how global sporting properties can create lasting value for their economies, businesses and people.

As Formula 1 prepares for its return to Africa, the next chapter will not be defined by the race alone, but by what the continent builds around it.
