• Lagos Athletics Association restates commitment to grassroots development
World’s third best sprinter, Kanyinsola Ajayi, has advised budding athletes to always prioritise hard work and commit to heart, their coaches wise counsels if they want to get to the top of their careers.
Ajayi also told the youngsters to seek means of improving on their performance even when some targets seem unattainable.
Speaking on Friday during a reception organised for him by the Lagos State Athletics Association in recognition of his outstanding achievements on the international athletics stage, Ajayi narrated how he rose from the streets of Ikorodu, Lagos, to the international stage, saying that hardwork, dedication to training and listening to his coaches’ advice were the main ingredients in his rise to stardom.
Using his personal journey as a source of inspiration, he encouraged young athletes to remain committed and connected to their roots, while acknowledging the sacrifices made by his family and coaches.
He said: “Today, I compete not just for myself, but for every young person watching who needs to know that excellence is possible. Stay rooted in your community and your family. Work hard early and when the door opens, work through it with purpose.
“I want to thank my first coach, coach Lawal Olapade. You saw potential in me when I was still finding my way. Your guidance, patience, and belief helped lay the foundation for everything that followed.”
“I have never forgotten the importance of community. No one rises alone. The people around me, friends, mentors, teammates, and neighbors poured into me, encouraged me and helped me to become accountable. Community is not just a support system; it is the soil that allows us to grow.”
Also speaking at the reception, the Chairman of the Lagos State Athletics Association, Dr Solomon Alao, reaffirmed the association’s commitment to supporting Ajayi and other athletes from Lagos State, while emphasising the need to continually invest in the growth and development of athletics.
He reiterated that the association’s vision extends beyond celebrating established stars to creating opportunities, providing encouragement, and nurturing emerging talents across Lagos State and Nigeria.
A particularly emotional highlight of the occasion was the recognition of Ajayi’s mother, who was honoured and presented with gifts by the association in appreciation of her sacrifices, dedication, and invaluable contribution to her son’s success.
