Akwa United hold Kano Pillars in NPFL Play-off thriller
Kano Pillars and Akwa United battled to an entertaining 2-2 draw in their opening match of the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL) playoffs at the Agege Stadium, Lagos yesterday, reports goal.com.
The teams met twice through the course of the regular season, with a 1-1 draw in Kano before the Promise Keepers came out on top in a 3-0 spanking of Sai Masu Gida in Uyo.
However, it was a different ball game in the matchday one playoffs, as Sai Masu Gida drew the first blood in the third minute through David Ebuka, before Akwa United staged a comeback in the 31st minute through Ndifreke Effiong, who nodded home the equaliser.
Ibrahim Musa’s men were not caged by the leveller from the Promise Keepers and they regained their lead two minutes later through Nyima Nwagua, who scored from a goal-mouth scramble.
There were still more talking points in the exciting first half in the 37th minute, when Godspower Aniefiok exploited Pillars’ aerial frailty to his team’s benefit to ensure that the teams went into the half-time break with honours even.
The second-half could not replicate the action-packed first-half, and the only bright point of the stanza was when Ifeanyi Nweke was given his marching orders in the 90th minute for unsporting conduct.
The game eventually ended with the teams sharing the spoils ahead of matchday two of the playoffs.
