Anxiety as Ghana, Togo, Benin battle Nigeria for top honours

Organisers of the 2025 Valuejet Lagos Regional Para Table Tennis Championship, which will feature some of West Africa’s top stars, say that they envisage exciting contests at the event slated for the Molade Okoya Thomas Hall of the Teslim Stadium, Lagos.

The championship, which will feature top stars from Nigeria, Ghana, Togo, and Benin Republic, serves off today.

According to the President of the Paralympic Committee of Nigeria (PCN), Sunday Odebode, the tournament, aimed at developing the sport across the West African region, will also serve as qualifiers for the maiden West African Paralympic Games, in September.

Speaking while unveiling the programme for the championship yesterday, Odebode said: “We are so excited that the tournament continues to take a new direction every year and for us, we feel it is important to grow the sport in the region, which is dominated by Nigeria.

“Making it a regional event this year is aimed at helping our neighbouring countries to grow the sport and we are expecting teams from Ghana, Togo, and the Benin Republic. This is another opportunity for the players to also showcase themselves through this kind of tournament.”

He disclosed that the championship will feature over 33 events in the men’s and women’s categories, including doubles and mixed doubles.

Also speaking at the event, Director General, Lagos State Sports Commission, Lekan Fatodu, said that hosting the tournament has established Lagos as the hub of table tennis in Africa.

“We wish all the participants the best of luck as we look forward to an exciting event this year,” Fatodu said.

In his remarks, ITTF Africa’s Chief Operating Officer, Kweku Tandoh, lauded Valuejet for keeping faith with its continued support of the tournament, just as he commended the PCN president for his commitment to raising the profile of para table tennis in Nigeria.
