In a thrilling leap onto the international stage, the Black Jedis of Corona School, Gbagada, Lagos, will join forces with All Rugby Schools (ARS) to represent the country at the Cheltenham Invitational 2025 in the United Kingdom later this month.
The young athletes from Corona School and Grange School, Lagos, journey to Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, will retrace the historic 1844 journey of the legendary Acton brothers from Rugby School to Cheltenham College, two of England’s most iconic rugby institutions.
Hosted by Cheltenham College and Cheltenham Prep School, the Invitational brings together schools with rich rugby traditions. It promises an inspiring experience for the Nigerian contingent, featuring full-contact matches across age groups, friendly fixtures, and cultural exchanges designed to deepen skills, teamwork, and love for the sport.
The Black Jedis will play matches at Cheltenham College Prep and also at the historic Rugby School, the birthplace of the game. “The tour is more than a competition; it’s a celebration of rugby’s values—sportsmanship, resilience, and camaraderie,” the organisers of the tour said in a statement.
“The Nigerian squad has undergone a rigorous nine-month training programme, led by experienced coaches and former professionals under the ARS Player Development Clinic at Corona School, Gbagada. This preparation has equipped the players for the physical and strategic demands of international rugby.
“Beyond the field, the Cheltenham Invitational promises a memorable cultural exchange—fostering friendships, mutual respect, and global connections through sport,” the statement said.
All Rugby Schools (ARS) is an independent youth rugby development programme dedicated to transforming lives through rugby. By promoting teamwork, discipline, and communication, ARS partners with schools to build a diverse and inclusive rugby community across Nigeria.
