Battle for promotion goes to the wire, in Asaba

There is anxiety in the air as the final matchday of the 2025 Nigeria National League (NNL) Super 8 playoffs holds tomorrow, July 10, at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba.

The top two teams from each conference will earn promotion to the NPFL, while the group winners will advance to the Championship Final to determine the overall NNL champion.

With no team yet assured of qualification, Thursday promises a dramatic conclusion to the season, with every match carrying significant weight.

Presently, the race for promotion to the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) remains wide open, as all eight teams participating in the 2025 NNL Super Eight playoffs are still mathematically in contention.

Last Monday, which was Match Day Two delivered crucial results that have left the promotion picture finely poised, with no team yet guaranteed a spot in Nigeria’s top flight.

In the Southern Conference, Warri Wolves bounced back from their opening day defeat to secure a resounding 3–0 victory over Kun Khalifat FC. The victory reignited their hope of finishing in the top two.

Osun United maintained their unbeaten run, salvaging a dramatic 1–1 draw against Crown FC of Ogbomoso.

Crown took the lead through Wasiu Falolu, but Osun earned a point late in the game when Nurudeen Abolude calmly converted a stoppage-time penalty.

All four teams remain in contention, with three points separating top from bottom.

The final day will determine which two sides secure promotion.

In the Northern Conference, Yobe Desert Stars secured a crucial 2–1 win over Doma United to move to the top of the standings. Despite the defeat, Doma remain in the race with one point, though they must win their final match to stand any chance.

Wikki Tourists and Barau FC played a goalless draw in Monday’s other fixture, a result that leaves both teams on two points, setting up a decisive final round.

Like in the South, the northern group remains delicately poised, with all four teams capable of claiming one of the two NPFL promotion spots.
