Edo State Deputy Governor, Comrade Philip Shaibu, on Monday, disclosed that the forthcoming Besty Obaseki football tournament will create public awareness on the First Lady’s pet project aimed at raising awareness against gender-based violence in the state.

The Besty Obaseki tournament is scheduled to hold from September 27 to October 4, 2021.

Briefing newsmen at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin, Shaibu said the tournament is solely private sector driven with the government only providing the facilities.

“Taxpayers money will not be involved in this tournament; it is being organised under Public-Private Partnership (PPP) arrangements.

“We are kick-starting a new era where the private sector will be driving sports in Edo. We have built facilities and created an enabling environment.

“It is now time for the private sector to take advantage of the facilities to drive sport in the state,” he said.

The deputy governor, who inspected the facilities ahead of the tournament, said the state was set for the football tournament to come on September 27.

On his part, the coordinator of the tournament and former FA chairman, Frank Ilaboya, revealed that the competition would be held in four venues, Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, UNIBEN Sports Complex, Western Boys Sports complex and the School of Health technology Sports Complex, all in Benin.
