Cameroon’s women’s national team, the Lionesses, is set to benefit from a $2.5 million preparation fund from FIFA ahead of the 2027 Women’s World Cup in Brazil. Nigeria’s Super Falcons will miss out on the financial package after failing to qualify for the championship.
FIFA has announced that each of the 32 nations that qualified for the tournament will receive $2.5 million to prepare for the global showpiece, representing a significant increase from the $960,000 allocated to each participating team ahead of the 2023 edition.
The funding package brings the preparation allowance for the women’s tournament in line with the amount provided to participating nations at the 2026 FIFA Men’s World Cup.
However, Nigeria, one of Africa’s traditional powerhouses in women’s football, will not benefit from the financial windfall after failing to punch their ticket to Brazil during the qualifying campaign in Morocco.
The Super Falcons’ absence means Nigeria will miss both the opportunity to compete on the global stage and the substantial financial support FIFA has earmarked for the participating nations.
The anticipated allocation for Cameroon represents a major boost as the country prepares for the tournament, with the funds expected to support preparations for the competition.
Beyond the financial package, FIFA has outlined improved welfare provisions for players participating in the 2027 tournament.
All players are guaranteed business-class or chartered flights, while each player will be provided with a private hotel room, ending the practice of players sharing accommodation.
FIFA has also indicated that any surplus revenue generated by the tournament will be distributed among participating member associations, with a specific portion reserved for the players.
The measures are part of efforts to improve conditions for players and strengthen the financial support available to nations competing at the Women’s World Cup.
The benefits will remain out of reach for Nigeria, with the failure to qualify in Morocco carrying financial consequences alongside the disappointment of missing another opportunity to showcase the Super Falcons on the world stage.
