President of Shitoryo Karate Union (NSKU) and Technical director Nigeria Mixed Martial Arts Federation (NMMAF), Victor Akhimien, has disclosed that listening to hymns and classical music can motivate the mindset and body of an athlete to excel in competitions.

Speaking at a Hymns and Classical Music Concert organised by his physical and Karate training academy, recently, at JD Plaza, Okota, Lagos, Akhimien said he decided to establish a Chorale/Orchestra Foundation to help individuals in every career, including athletes, understand that music, as an art, is a tool of mental alertness that can spur an individual to be more productive, as well as to be efficient in any physical or mental activity.

“The act of singing or listening to hymns and classical music influences the inner mind to push an athlete beyond expectations during any event.

“Hymns and classical music are vital influences in sports. When players listen to hymns and classical songs in the way the UEFA Champions League anthem is played, you will observe that it raises the spirit and excites the players with passion to give their best against all odds during a game.

“Some players even feel a sense of high emotion when the UEFA Champions League anthem is played. The organisers of the UEFA Champions League understand the place of classical music as a motivational tool in sports on athletes.”

Akhimien said he decided to set up a chorale and/orchestra foundation alongside his fitness and karate academy to preach the importance and create awareness of hymns and classical songs benefit to athletes and also help more Nigerian youths grow in skills of their choice.

“Hymns are not only for church purposes… it can be sang at any occasion. Most karate athletes in the Foundation, as well as people in other sports and careers, are excited to be part of the initiative,” he said.
