Coal City 2026 National Sports Festival: Ekweremadu heads LOC as Enugu State constitutes sub-committees

The local organising committee (LOC) for the Enugu 2026 National Sports Festival, tagged Coal City Games, has announced the composition of the sub-committees saddled with the responsibility of organising a successful sports festival.

The LOC is headed by Enugu State Commissioner of Sports, Llyod Ekweremadu, with former international athletes, Mary Onyali, Victor Okorie and Davidson Owumi as members.

Other members of the LOC are Akuchukwu Aghazu, Blessing Chisalam Ekwe, Tony Ugwu, Jonathan Nnaji, Boniface Onovo, Ephraim Ochonma, Obiora Obasi, Henry Chinedu Okorie and Bamiduro Olumide.

The sub-committees proposed by the LOC include the Games Village Management Committee headed by Ekweremadu, with Bamiduro serving as secretary. Other members include Davidson Owumi, Dr Ademola Are, Boniface Onovo, Miriam Aniekwe and Obiora Obasi.

The Accommodation Sub-Committee will be headed by Obiora Obasi as chairman, with Henry Okorie as deputy chairman and Obinna Chukwu as secretary. Eugenia Udeh, Gbenga Omoyemi and other officials will also serve on the committee.

The Catering Sub-Committee will be chaired by Ekweremadu, with Bamiduro as deputy chairman and Nancy Nwoha as secretary. Nkiru Udunaga will serve as assistant secretary, alongside other members.

The Media and Communication Sub-Committee will be chaired by the Enugu State Commissioner for Information, with Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) Chairman, Gideon Iwueke as deputy chairman.

The Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Media, Uche Anichukwu, will serve as secretary, while other members include Dan Nwomeh, Foster Ejikeme Chime, Dan Onwuegbuna, Frankie Omokhua, Osondu Ngwude, Nneka Anibueze, Ndubueze Chidoka of Radio Nigeria, Felicia Nwokorie, Solomon Unya and Brian Okechukwu, the media officer of the Ministry of Youth and Sports.

The committee is expected to coordinate publicity, media access, information dissemination and communication activities before and during the Games, as preparations intensify for the national sporting event.
Security and ceremonial arrangements

The Protocol Sub-Committee will be headed by the Chief of Protocol to the Enugu State Government, with Princess Ugwu Obiajulu as deputy chairman and the Senior Special Assistant on Protocol to the Governor as secretary.

The Ceremonial Sub-Committee will be chaired by Akuchukwu Aghazu, with Ricky Agu, Chairman of Enugu Air, serving as deputy chairman.

The Director of Organisation in the Ministry of Youth and Sports will serve as secretary, while Bamiduro, Edward Adebisi, Jane Owoh and Robinson Okosun are listed as members.

Security arrangements will be coordinated by a committee chaired by the Commissioner of Police, with Raymond Ugwu, Chairman of the House Committee on Youths, Sports and Security, as deputy chairman. Osondu Ifeanyi, Chief Security Officer to the Government House, will serve as secretary.

Representatives of the Department of State Services, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and the General Officer Commanding 82 Division are also included in the security structure, alongside other security and government officials.

The committee is expected to work across relevant agencies to support a coordinated security framework for athletes, officials, spectators and other participants during the festival.

The LOC also constituted sub-committees for transport, venue and facilities, finance, marketing and sponsorship, volunteers, mobilisation, tourism and festival experience, medical services, technical operations and the Games Secretariat.

The festival is scheduled for November 27 to December 11, with the various committees expected to work within their respective mandates to ensure that preparations remain coordinated ahead of the opening of the Game.
