English Premiership will lose £750M if league ends abruptly

Failure to complete the season could see the Premier League lose a whopping £750 million, reports sportsbible.com.

On Friday morning, following an emergency meeting, it was confirmed that the Premier League and EFL have suspended all games until April 3 amidst the spread of the Coronavirus. The postponement includes all matches in the Premier League, Championship, League One and League Two, as well as all academy and youth-team fixtures.

The news comes after Serie A, La Liga, Bundesliga and Ligue One elected to temporarily halt their respective campaigns.
And according to The Times, if this term gets cancelled completely, it will come at a major cost – £750 million in broadcasting and commercial money to be exact.

A senior broadcasting figure shed light on the situation, telling The Times: “The commercial reality for the Premier League and UEFA is that if they don’t complete their seasons then they are in breach of their broadcasting contracts.

“You would have broadcasters from all around the world saying, ‘In that case we are not paying for the season.’ For the Premier League you are talking around £3 billion income a year from overseas and domestic TV rights.

“There would also be financial implications if the competitions were squeezed, so fewer matches were played.”

In the same article, it’s reported FA Chairman Greg Clarke fears that the season will not be completed and told league chiefs during a meeting.

Senior Premier League club source says 75% chance season won’t be completed: “I can’t see any chance we’ll be back in 3 weeks. This will go on for months. You even wonder about the start of next season. There are huge questions to answer. Does anybody get promoted or relegated?”

The Premier League had originally decided to play all games behind closed doors this weekend to combat the virus but reversed their decision and postponed all games when it emerged Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta was diagnosed with coronavirus on Thursday evening.

In terms of the outcomes of the season, The Telegraph say Liverpool are likely to be crowned champions for the first time in 30 years irrespective of what happens.

It’s also said that the proposed plan is to promote the Championship’s top two teams Leeds United and West Bromwich Albion and scrap relegation from the Premier League – resulting in a 22-team league in the 2020/2021 season.
