Bayer Leverkusen star, Nathan Tella, yesterday, became the latest to withdraw from the Super Eagles’ squad less than a week to Nigeria’s 2026 World Cup qualifier against South Africa.
Super Eagles’ striker, Victor Osimhen, had earlier withdrawn from the squad due to injury, while Samuel Chukwueze, and Frank Onyeka are likely to join Skipper William Troost-Ekong on the sidelines over fitness issues.
Yesterday, Tella, who helped Bayer Leverkusen to win the Bundesliga and German Cup titles this season, withdrew from the squad citing family reasons, according to information available on the Super Eagles X account.
The statement on X reads: “WCQ Camp Update: Nathan Tella of Bayer Leverkusen has excused himself from the upcoming WCQ matches due to family reasons. Coach Finidi George has now called up Ibrahim Olawoyin of Caykur Rizespor of Turkey.”
Olawoyin, who has been in impressive form for Caykur Rizespor in the Turkish top-flight this season, is making his debut for the national team.
Earlier, George had invited Enugu Rangers defender, Kenneth Igboke, as Osimhen’s replacement in the team billed to host South Africa in Uyo on June 7 and travel to Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire, as guests of Benn Republic in a matchday four game.
