Former Media Officer of Rivers United FC, Sammy Wejinya, has cried foul over the one-year ban placed on him by the management of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL).
The NPFL banned Wejinya from all NPFL-related activities, including league venues, until the end of the season. The ban, according to NPFL comes following a review on Wejinya’s article titled: ‘Lafia, pain, blood and escaping death by whiskers’, which the league management body said misrepresented the true state of the events.
However, Wejinya stated yesterday that he was unjustly banned the NPFL.
“I am a journalist based in Port Harcourt,” Wejinya said in a message to The Guardian. “Yesterday, the Nigeria Premier Football League pronounced a ban on me from Stadiums in Nigeria from now till the end of the season.
“Now, the reason for this ban was because of an incident, which played out in Lafia, Nasarawa State on Sunday, December 22, 2024. During the said game, which was played at the Lafia City Stadium, I was beaten up by fans of Nasarawa United. My crime was writing an article about what happened to me and circulating on Social Media.
“The NPFL big wigs weren’t happy that I ‘damaged their brand’ by writing about a glaring lack of security at the Stadium on that day. For them, the matter should have been treated in house,” Wejinya stated.
