Familoni, Allagenyi are champions of Zenith Bank/Ikoyi Club Tennis


Gbenga Familoni has emerged winners of the men’s singles Class A of 4th Zenith Bank/Ikoyi Club Tennis Tournament following a 6-3, 6-3 win over Godwin Kienka.

At a colurful final, which has, among other dignitaries, Ikoyi Club’s Chairman, Tunde Akinleye and a host of his fellow executives in attendance, Familoni matched the defending champion in all aspects of the game.

“It was a very tough game because he (Kienka) is an experienced player and has won several tournaments in the club.


Remember, he also competed in the veterans’ doubles, which he won to show how good he is. I needed to be on top of my game and that was what saw me through,” Familoni said.

However, there was no worry for the Women’s Singles defending champion Julie Alagneyi who bested Ego Mbagwu 6-3, 6-1.

In the Men’s Class B, Bamidele Oshiga defeated Sule Mustafa 6-3, 6-4 to claim the top prize.

Innocent Ihebuzor also bagged the Veteran’s Singles by beating Walter Jibunor while Kienka and Deji Oyesanya won the Veterans’ Doubles 7-5, 6-3 at the expense of Ihebuzor and Olaleye Olowe.

The Men’s Doubles title was won by Femi Fanoiki and Segun Abijo after Morang Mrityunjay and Walter Eze scratched despite leading 5-1 just as Alagenyi and Eniola Dele Oshiga paired to bag the Women’s Doubles title by beating Maryann Chuks and Janet Okoronkwo 7-6, 7-6.

Managing Director Zenith Bank Peter Amangbo expressed delight at the tournament pledging support to make it more colourful and expanded.

Tennis Section chairman, Bimbo Okubena lauded Zenith Bank for showing more commitment to the tournament and vowed to keep using the tournament to add value to the bank being a reputed global financial institution.
