Fashanu: Infighting, official negligence almost ruined Eagles’ chances

Former England international, John Fashanu, has said that only a miracle can help Nigeria to qualify for the 2026 World Cup billed to hold in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Nigeria is Group C of the African qualifying series alongside South Africa, Benin Republic, Rwanda, Lesotho and Zimbabwe.

Hugo Broos’ South Africa lead Group C with 13 points after six matches, six points clear of Super Eagles.

There are four rounds of matches left in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

Fashanu said the picture would have been different if top officials of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) were united in the quest to lead the Super Eagles to the World Cup ticket.

Speaking in Abeokuta, yesterday, Fashanu said: “ There were discordant tunes that disorganised the team. You need a united front to succeed in international football, but unfortunately, the NFF lacked that.”

He added, however, that the Super Eagles could still make the World Cup if a miracle happens.

“To be honest, it is very difficult now, but not impossible. Qualifying for the World Cup will be a fantastic shock. But to get the ticket, we must all come together.

“There are so much quarrels in the team with people saying different things and distracting the team,” he said.

Fashanu spoke at the MKO Abiola Stadium, Abeokuta, where the state government took a group of journalists round the facilities billed to host the National Sports Festival, which holds in the city later this month.
