Ademola Lookman in Madrid for Atlético medical

Ademola Lookman in Madrid, Spain

Atlético Madrid has announced that Super Eagles attacker, Ademola Lookman is already in Madrid to undergo a medical ahead of joining the Spanish La Liga club.

Atlético made the announcement in a statement on its official website after reaching an agreement with Atalanta over the transfer of Lookman.

“The Nigerian forward is already in Madrid, where he will undergo a medical and will finish formalizing his new contract,” the statement read.

“Atlético de Madrid and Atalanta have reached an agreement over the transfer of Ademola Lookman, 28-year-old Nigerian international forward who is already in Madrid.

“The agreement is subject to passing his medical and agreeing and formalizing his contract.”

Italian transfer expert, Fabrizio Romano, had earlier reported that there was a twist in Lookman’s transfer with Atlético usurping Fenerbahce to reach an agreement with Atalanta for the Nigerian international.

“Ademola Lookman to Atlético Madrid, here we go! The agreement is in place on every detail,” Romano wrote on Sunday in a post on his verified X account.

“€35 million fixed fee, €5m add-ons to Atalanta and long term deal agreed by Lookman after decision last night (Saturday). Atlético, planning now for travel and medical next for the Nigerian.”

Lookman, who etched his name in history with a hat-trick in the 2024 Europa League final against Bayer Leverkusen, has secured a long-term deal with Atlético until 2031.

The Super Eagles forward joined Atalanta in August 2022 from RB Leipzig (after a loan spell at Leicester City) and quickly became one of the club’s most important attacking players under former manager, Gian Piero Gasperini.

His time at Atalanta transformed him from a promising but inconsistent forward into a decisive, high-level performer and one of Nigeria’s brightest talents in football.

He made 137 appearances across all competitions for Atalanta, scoring 55 goals and providing 27 assists. In 105 Serie A appearances, Lookman scored 41 goals and registered 21 assists.

The highlight of his Atalanta career came in the UEFA Europa League in 2023–24. In helping the Italian Serie A club win its first-ever major European trophy, Lookman delivered one of the most iconic individual performances in recent European finals, scoring a hat-trick in the 3-0 victory over unbeaten Bayer Leverkusen on May 22, 2024, in Dublin, Ireland.

His goals, the third a stunning left-footed strike ended Leverkusen’s 51-game unbeaten run and made Lookman the first player to score a hat-trick in a major European club final since 1975.

This moment cemented his legacy at Atalanta and propelled him to global recognition. Lookman won the African Footballer of the Year award in 2024, largely thanks to his Europa League heroics and overall club/national team impact, while he also finished 14th in the Ballon d’Or that year.
