Interim coach of Nigeria’s Super Falcons, Austin Eguavoen, said the captain of the team, Raheedat Ajibade, has been taken to the hospital after colliding with a Comoros player on Tuesday.
The Super Falcons secured a comfortable 5-0 win over Comoros to wrap up the second round of the 2028 Olympic women’s football qualifiers with a 7-0 aggregate scoreline at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne where the two legs held given the visitor’s lack of a CAF-approved stadium.
Uchenna Kanu and Toni Paybe bagged a brace respectively, while Christy Ucheibe scored from the penalty spot in the second half.
Folashade Ijamilusi came on for the Paris Saint-Germain forward after the incident in the first half as the ten-time African champions cruised to victory.
However, Ajibade’s injury overshadowed the win as she was visibly in pain before she was taken off.
While speaking to the media after the match, Eguavoen confirmed Ajibade was being taken to the hospital, where she will undergo an MRI scan.
“Ajibade, I have not heard anything. I was with the medical team, and they said they are taking her to the hospital for an MRI to ascertain the degree of the injury,” Eguavoen told reporters.
“Hopefully, before we get back to the hotel, we will know. As soon as we have information, I’m not the one to give it; the medical team will contact the Head of Media, and then we’ll get an update on Ajibade’s injury.
“Unfortunately, we lost Ajibade early in the game. I think, and I hope, that the injury is very minor.”
The Super Falcons will shift their attention to the third round of the qualification series, where they will take on Morocco as they continue their journey towards the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.
