Nigeria Premier Football League side Ikorodu City have been criticized by football enthusiasts for deleting an X post on its timeline in which it welcomed the Presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, ahead of the 2027 General Elections, to the match against league champions Enugu Rangers at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena on Sunday evening.

Peter Obi was accompanied by Ladipo Johnson, the NDC candidate for Lagos Central Senatorial District, and Aisha Jimoh, the NDC candidate for the House of Representatives, Lagos Island Constituency II.

Ikorodu City shared an X post welcoming Peter Obi to the stadium as he sat in the VVIP section alongside the president of the club, Mr. Sanmi Doherty.

However, hours after the hosts secured a 2-0-win over the Flying Antelopes, the X post vanished from the timeline of the club’s X handle, drawing the attention of football fans.

It is believed that the club deleted the post due to political pressure, given that Peter Obi is an opposition candidate to the ruling party, the All Progressive Congress (APC), ahead of the 2027 Presidential Election.

Football journalist Olawale Adigun while reacting to the development, said it was a missed opportunity to give the Nigeria Premier Football League further visibility. He stressed that the presence of personalities like Peter Obi during league matches across various match centers is what the NPFL craves.

He went on to to criticize the club for having a “brain fart” moment which lead to removing the post from its X feeds hours after celebrating the presence of the NDC Presidential candidate.

“Ikorodu City wan rage bait me this morning with that nonsense they did yesterday. But let me allow. You could Famz the Politician, then suddenly you had a brain fart moment and realised his audience were taking advantage of it, which is not even true. What happened to trying to help to grow the league by attracting people like him,” Adigun wrote on his X page.

Olawale Adigun also criticized Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-olu, for postponing the first Lagos Derby of the NPFL season for a political event.

“The club’s state Governor as a matter of fact postponed your biggest Derby in decades because of a political prayer meeting, not one post expressing angst, especially for a “privately run club”.

“To make matters worse, the DJ Spinall who has been told to spin this for the club is making a mess of it.”
