Four international stars, 120 locals begin chase for laurels in Lagos

Excitement is building as four international golfers will slug it out with 120 others at the 12th Awa Ibraheem Junior Open Golf Championship, which begins today at the Ikeja Golf Club, reports the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

The World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) event will feature such international golfers as
Nkous-Angy Nelson, a 12-year-old from Cameroon in the male category; 11-year-old Yvonne Dorm, Paulo Eyram-Quarshe, (15, male) and Zanetor Dakudzu (14, male) – all from Ghana.

According to the Technical Lead of the competition, Jide Bolaji, the cadet golf competition is divided into four categories: age six to eight will play holes per round and age nine to 11 will battle in nine holes per round.

“Other categories are age 12 to 13, 18 holes per round (to play two rounds on Day 1); age 14 to 16, 18 holes per round (to play two rounds on Day 1).

“All players will arrive on Friday for accreditation, while the tournament will begin on Saturday and end on Sunday,” he said.

Bolaji said that the competition would be played in accordance with the Rules of Golf by R&A, USGA and the local rules of Ikeja Golf Club, as well as the event tournament rules.

He further clarified that players are advised to read the local rules of the club as contained at the back of the score card, while adults are advised to assist the children in that area.

“It is a Strokeplay event, gross play. The draw shall be made for each round and will be posted on the event platform and other relevant platforms.

“Adults should assist in this area. Excuse bordering on the ignorance of the draw shall not be entertained from any player.

In the event of a tie for the winner in any of the categories, there will be a sudden death play-off starting from Hole 1 until a winner emerges,” he said.
