Latest NTF’s number four ranking delights Edwards
Central Bank of Nigeria Open U-14 Champion, Marylove Edwards has expressed happiness at her number four position in the women’s singles ranking recently released by the Nigerian Tennis Federation (NTF).
The 12-year-old junior tennis sensation caused a stir at the CBN Open where she defeated some top top-seeded players to finish as first-runner up in in the women’s singles event. She was a wild card entry to the competition.
Before joining the CBN Seniors, the player, who is currently ranked number one in the U-14 category in Africa, had won the CBN Open U-12 competition, Lagos State All Secondary Schools Championship, Ikoyi Club Junior Open and NNPC Junior Open (U14), among several others.
According to the ranking released on June 5, Edwards is now behind Nigeria’s number one, Agugbom Christy, Sarah Adegoke (two) and Blessing Samuel (three) with 70 points.
While reacting to her new found feat, Edwards said this was just the beginning of the journey in her ambition to become the first Nigerian female tennis player to appear on the Women Tennis Association circuit and to break into the top 20 female tennis players’ rankings globally.
“This is a giant leap for me and I hope to use this as a motivation to get to the top. The goal is to become the best. I am grateful to have a wonderful team behind me,” she said.
Meanwhile, the Head of Sports, Temple Management Company, Koye Sowemimo has revealed that the goal set for Edwards is for her to become a global champion and a brand. He added that the 12-year-old prodigy is in top preparation for the African championships holding later in the year in Tunisia.
