Eagles begin AFCON qualifiers against Madagascar Sept. 25

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), yesterday, disclosed that this year’s elective congress of the federation, earlier scheduled for September 26 in Lafia, Nasarawa State, has now been moved by 24 hours in the same city. The congress will now hold on September 27, 2026.
 
The elective congress will usher in members into the NFF’s executive committee for the next four years.
 
Rising from the federation’s virtual extraordinary general assembly yesterday, NFF President, Ibrahim Musa Gusau, explained that the request for a date change was necessitated by the date given for the Super Eagles’ opening qualifying match for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, against Madagascar’s Barea.
 
The NFF said: “Following interactions with the Confederation of African Football (CAF), the date agreed for the match is Friday, September 25, 2026. Obviously, it will be highly impossible for a number of candidates in the election, who will be at the match, to make it to Lafia the following morning in time for the Elective Congress.”
 
Gusau added that the need to consider this situation necessitated the NFF’s extraordinary general assembly, where the new date for the elective congress was proposed and adopted.
