Nigeria beats South Africa in Men’s team event

Quadri Aruna led Nigeria to defeat South Africa in the Men’s Team – Group 2 table tennis event at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games yesterday.

Aruna and Olajide Omotayo picked up wins in the singles while Amadi Omeh and Omotayo won in the doubles.

Against South Africa’s Shaun Jones, Aruna triumphed in three straight sets (11 -6,11 – 3, 12 -10) with Omotayo replicating the feat against another South African Chetan Nathoo (11 – 9, 11-6, 11-6).

And in the men’s doubles, both Omotayo and Omeh beat South Africa’s Theo Cogill and Nathoo 3-0 (11 -5, 11-5, 11 -5).

The Nigerian trio was expected to play Ghana by 7.30 pm yesterday evening in their second group match.

Earlier yesterday, the Nigerian women’s team, led by Offiong Edem beat St Vincent and The Grenadines.
