NNL relegation playoff begins with harvest of goals

It was goals galore at the Nigerian National League (NNL) relegation playoff, which began yesterday at the Sanni Abacha Stadium, Kano.

Sokoto United and FWC Champions of Abuja started the goals’ rain with a five-goal thriller, which the boys from the Caliphate won by 3-2 to keep alive their hopes of remaining in the NNL.

Highly-rated Edel FC of Awka crumbled like a pack of cards, losing 0-4 to Hensards of Yenagoa, with Coach Godwin Anosike of Edel blaming the poor start on the depletion of his squad.

The two teams from Lagos, Ikorodu United and Smart City, played what was the most thrilling match of the day in a game, in which Smart City managed to secure a 1-0 victory.

Ikorodu United, in defeat, gave a good account of themselves with the fans at the Sanni Abacha Stadium cheering them throughout the game. Despite creating several chances, the Ikorodu lads failed to find the back of the net.

The NNL playoff match day one was watched by thousands of soccer fans, who went home impressed with the standard of play and high level performance of the referees.
