The Chairperson of South West Gymnastics Association, Dr. Omowunmi Olalere, has promised more opportunities for athletes to hone their skills in the sport through more competitions and workshops.

The association held its maiden championship at the indoor sports hall of the National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos, at the weekend, with over 60 athletes representing the six states of the South West region.

Speaking at the end of the competition, Olalere expressed her delight at the performance of the athletes at the event, which coincided with her birthday celebration, saying it was the beginning of good times for gymnastics in the region.

She promised to sustain grassroots development of the sport, which offers more medals than most other events in international championships.
At the end of the competition, Lagos State emerged champions with seven gold medals, five silver and six bronze medals, with Ondo in second place with six gold, five silver and five bronze medals.

The third position went to Oyo State that had two gold, three silver and four bronze medals. Apart from the medals and cash rewards to the outstanding gymnasts by Olalere, the top three states were also rewarded with trophies.

Applauding the organisers for the opportunities given the athletes through the competition, Southwest Coordinator of the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports Development, Emma Okere, also commended Olalere for personally sponsoring the three-day championship.
