Organisers release 12th Awa Ibraheem Junior Open Golf Championship merit list

Organisers of the yearly Awa Ibraheem Junior Open Golf Championship, which will hold from October 17 to 19 at the Ikeja Golf Club, Ikeja, Lagos State, have released the players on the competition’s merit list..

This year’s championship, according to the organisers, has been selected by the Nigeria School Sports Federation (NSSF) as one of the qualifiers for the World School Golf Championship, holding in Morocco 2026.

The organisers said that in a bid to raise the standard of the championship, they will adopt the National Order of Merit as qualifying standard, just as they will consider a wider geographical spread in the field size, among others.

Registration for the championship begins tomorrow and ends on September 25, the organisers said, while advising participants that require official letters of release to their schools to contact the committee on or before September 25.

The 12th Awa Ibraheem Junior Open Golf Championship, open to boys and girls from age six to 16, has been divided into four boys and girls’ categories with each category featuring five players.

Listed in the age six to eight girls’ category are Tiaraoluwa Ahmadu from Lagos State, Michelle Wesley (FCT), Jedidah Lawson (Lagos), Eugenia Mendes (Lagos) and Jemilat Sanni (Lagos), while boys category Comprises Melvin Strasser (Lagos), John Ochaba (Otukpo), Caleb Nihu (Lagos), Ikemsinachi Arubike (Lagos) and Orieoghene David (UBTH).

In the girls’ nine to 11 years age category are Ogun State’s Adams Makareem, Emmanuella O Wesley (FCT), Balogun Toluwalashe (Lagos), Ochanya Omakwu (Otukpo) and Funmilayo Oyero (Lagos), just as the boys’ category comprises Dada Caleb (ROSANI), Lewis Dandyson (Rivers), Emmanuel Adah (Otukpo), Jordan Dandyson (Rivers) and Ajanaku Zahir (Lagos).

Listed in the girls’ age 12 to 14 category are Josephine Benjamin Clement (IBB), Sharon Okolo (FCT), Akatu Jennifer Ebehi (Benue), Zakachat Kaburuk (Plateau), Halima Sa’adiya Atta-Bala (IBB) and Precious John (Otukpo), while in the boys’ category are Destiny Oyero (Ikeja), Philip Ameh (RFD), John Onjefu Otukpo), Mathew Ayi (NIPSS) and Una Ogoh (Otukpo).

Among the girls in the 15 to 16 years category are Blessing Adah (Benue), Deborah Dung (RFGC), Arna Arora (Lagos), Peace Aduma (Otukpo) and Pearl Omaruaye (Lakowe), while their boys’ counterparts are David James (Lamingo), Nandom Danjuma (Lamingo), John Joshua (Benue), Aleji Austin (Benue) and Ocha Simon (Benue).

According to the organisers, any player that has outgrown his current age category would be moved to play in the next higher category, while players above 16 years will be removed from the championship.
