United States-based Favour Ashe will be the centre of attraction today when the track and field events begin at the ongoing maiden Niger Delta Sports Festival in Uyo.

The Games, which is the first regional sports festival in the country, began yesterday, at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Uyo.

Two events, football and handball, were held yesterday even before the opening ceremony.

Today, Ashe and other athletes are expected to begin their quest for medals and he is the favourite for both the 100m and 200m gold medals.

Ashe burst into the Nigerian athletics scene in 2022. He led Nigeria’s male relay team at the 2022 World Athletics Championship in Eugene, Oregon, United States.

An official of Team Delta told The Guardian that Ashe is in fine form this year. “We expect him to improve on his performances when he faces other athletes here in the Niger Delta sports festival,” the official said.

Over 4000 athletes and officials are participating in the festival.
