Over 30 clubs and 1, 000 athletes are set to participate in the maiden Lagos Club Athletics Series billed to commence on February 19, 2023.
Speaking yesterday, at a reception organised for the state’s athletes and coaches that participated in last year’s National Sports Festival in Asaba, Lagos State Athletics Association (LASAA) Chairman, Solomon Alao, said the competition is a national competition open to every club in the country.

He said the series is aimed at changing the face of athletics in the country, adding that athletes need to keep improving and training, and competitions are vital for progress in their careers.

Alao noted that the window of competition for an athlete is very short, hence the club athletics series would ensure Nigerian athletes are built for international competitions.

Also speaking at the event, Technical Director, Lagos State Athletics Association, Enefiok Udo-Obong, said the association would do everything to support the athletes’ careers, adding that clubs have been developing them over the years.

The two-time Olympic medalist noted that every athlete currently representing or those that represented Lagos State was built by coaches of clubs, hence the need to recognise the coaches and their clubs for their key roles in developing talents through the competition.

Giving a breakdown of activities lined up at the series, Udo-Obong said the competition would hold in Lagos on four legs in February, April, May and June.

He said there is a cash price of over N10 million for the winners to encourage the athletes to work hard, adding that two clubs from Togo and Benin Republic have indicated interest to participate in the competition.

At the event, a technical committee that will oversee the competition was inaugurated. Members of the committee are Mrs. Olapade Lawal, Mr. Tola Adebayo, Mr. Abiodun Ibrahim, Mr. Lakan Soyitan, Mr Olufemi Daramola and Mr. Tunde Suleiman.
