Nigeria’s faint hope of making it to the second round of the women’s football at the ongoing Paris 2024 Olympics was extinguished by Japan, who defeated the Nigerian girls 3-1 in their last group game of the competition, yesterday.

Japan scored twice in the 22nd and 32nd minutes to silence the Coach Randy Waldrum’s girls, who needed to beat the Asians by at least a two-goal margin to qualify as one of the best third-placed teams at the competition.

The girls had no answer to the fast-paced Japanese game and were left to chase shadows for a better part of the game. Not even a well-taken consolatory goal by Jennifer Echegini in an entertaining first half could lift the Nigerians, who conceded a third goal early in the second half to end the game 1-3.

The defeat thus brought Super Falcons’ campaign at the Olympics to an early end. Nigeria had earlier lost their first two games to Brazil and Spain and needed a win, yesterday to restore their campaign on track. But it was not to be.

The Super Falcons departed the competition in France without making a single point and scoring only one goal in their three matches.Attention now shifts to D’Tigress, who will meet France in their second group game in the women’s basketball today.

The Rena Wakama girls beat Australia in their opening game, while hosts, France, defeated Canada in their first game. The winner of today’s game will automatically qualify for the quarterfinals, while the loser will wait till the final game day to know her fate in the competition.
