Plateau United dethrone Rangers
Win 1-0 To Emerge League Champions, 3SC, Others Relegated
Plateau United Football Club of Jos, yesterday, emerged champions of the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL), beating former champions, Enugu Rangers 1-0 at the Rwang Pam Stadium, in Jos.
It was however a sad day for Ibadan warlords, Shooting Stars Sports Club, as they were relegated to the lower division after suffering a 0-1 defeat to Niger Tornadoes.
Remo Stars of Sagamu, ABS of Ilorin and Gombe United are also relegated from the NPFL. While Remo Stars were forced to a 0-0 draw at home yesterday by Sunshine Stars of Akure, ABS of Ilorin also drew 0-0 away to Nasarawa, but was not enough to see them escape from the relegation waters.
The hope of MFM FC of Lagos rescuing the top position from Plateau United on the final day were unsuccessful, as they were beaten 2-1 by El-Kanemi Warriors in Maiduguri.
For the Jos–based outfit, yesterday’s 1-0 win against Rangers was a well-deserved climax to their fairytale campaign in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL). Not many fans gave the Kennedy Boboye–coached side a chance at the start of the season.
No major football title has gone to Jos since the 1999 FA Cup, when Donatus Iloka’s solitary goal crowned Plateau United winners at the National Stadium in Lagos.
Plateau United completed the season with 66 points after 38 matches, while last season’s winners, Enugu Rangers could only managed 53 points after 38 games.
In other results yesterday, FC Ifeanyi Ubah lost 0-1 at home to Lobi Stars, while Enyimba of Aba won 1-0 against Katsina United.
