Players, friends throng Benin Club for Odigie at 80 tournament


Amateur golfers from across the country are expected to take over the golf course of the Benin Club, Golf Section (BCGS) on August 10 in celebration of Chief Odigie-Oyegun’s 80th birthday.

The birthday tournament will parade top amateur golfers from the host club, Ikoyi Club, Ikeja Golf Club, UBTH Golf Club, Ogunnu Golf Resort, Warri, Ibori Golf and Country Club, Asaba and Sapele Athletics Golf Club, among others.

According to BCGS’ Competitions Secretary, Dr. Emmanuel Ighodaro, over 150 golfers are expected at the tournament being organised by the Edo State government in honour of Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, the immediate past National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC).


He said: “Chief Oyegun, a former governor of the state, is worth celebrating, going by his records as a governor, and as immediate past National Chairman of APC. He has distinguished himself in all fields of politics. He is a pride of Edo State, whose contributions to sports are immeasurable.

“This tournament is put together by the state government as part of the 80th birthday celebration, while other activities include church service on Monday, August 12th and gala night dinner.

“It is based on the antecedents that Edo State government deems it fit to celebrate him, having attained the group of octogenarian. It is the Lord’s doing, and it is marvelous to celebrate an icon of good governance in Edo State and Nigeria in general.

“Governor Godwin Obaseki and his deputy, Philip Shaibu will play alongside Chief Oyegun, while his friends and associates across the country will feature too. The tournament tee-off time is 6:30 a.m., but the ceremonial tee-off is slated for 9:00 a.m.

“Presentation of trophies and prizes for winners in various categories will hold later during the dinner ceremony.”
