Sapele, Obiaruku schools ready as organisers pick final date this week
The organisers of the annual tournament at the weekend said the finalists were eager to clinch the ultimate trophy of the event sponsored by Zenith Bank Plc.
This edition, the third in the series, started in October 2018 with all the schools in the 25 Local Governments in the state competing for honours.
The competition went on break because of the general elections, but before then Obule Integrated School, Sapele and Boys Secondary School, Obiaruku had qualified for the final.
Obule defeated Ekpan Secondary School 8-7 via a penalty shootout in the first semifinal match, while Boys Secondary School also defeated Comprehensive Secondary School 4-3 after penalty shoot-out. Full time score was 1-1.
Head of the organising team, Tony Pemu at the weekend said, “We will decide this week when the final will take place based on the decision of the Local Organising Committee and the availability of the Governor.
“As organisers, we are ready, but the forthcoming games of the Super Eagles and the U-23 team are bound to affect us since the final of our competition is also slated for the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba.
“I can confirm that the two teams for the third place and also the two teams for the finals are preparing very well for the final day of the tournament.”
The competition was revived three years ago courtesy of a partnership between the Governor Ifeanyi Okowa-led administration of Delta State and Zenith Bank Plc.
