Super Eagles drop eight places in latest FIFA rankings

The Super Eagles of Nigeria missed another opportunity to rub shoulders with global football heavyweights after falling eight places in the latest FIFA rankings.

The rankings which were released for November on the official website of the Federation of International Football Association (FIFA) on Thursday saw Nigeria drop from 36th to 44th in the global rankings thereby dropping from fourth to fifth position within Africa.

This decline can likely be attributed to the team’s disappointing performance in their final qualifiers for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. In a recent match, the West African side drew 1-1 with Benin Republic in Cote d’Ivoire and then suffered a 1-2 defeat to Rwanda in Uyo.

In African rankings, Morocco continues to hold the top spot, followed by Senegal in second, Algeria in third, and Egypt in fourth.

The last FIFA rankings for 2024 are scheduled to be released on December 14. With the Super Eagles inactive for the remainder of the year, it seems unlikely that they will move up in the standings.

At the global level, Argentina, France, and Spain retain the top three positions, while England and Brazil round out the top five.
