Team Kalotari’s Sunday Maku could not stop Team Civil Defence from qualifying for the semifinals of the NCC Tennis League… at the weekend.

Team Civil Defence at the weekend in Kaduna rode on the back of Team Kalotari, whom they beat 4-0 on the first day of their final round robin tie, to qualify for the semifinals of the on-going NCC Tennis League.

Civil Defence, who came second in the league last year, have two former men’s champions, Shehu Lawal and Abdulmumuni Babalola, as well as the current women’s champion, Christie Agugbom, in their team.

They proved too strong for the Port Harcourt-based Team Kalotari, with Lawal beating Musa Bala of Kalotari in three sets of 2-6, 7-6, 6-3.

Babalola then increased the points’ haul by defeating Sunday Maku, himself a former Nigerian number one, 6-1, 6-1, just as the women’s singles expectedly went to Team Civil Defence with Agugbom fencing off the determined second set challenge of Patience Onebamhoin to prevail 6-0, 6-3.

The pair of Lawal and Babalola combined to beat Maku and Musa in the men’s doubles 6-4, 6-4 to secure the four points they needed to win the tie and lead the White Group.

With the loss by Kalotari, Team FCT, which still have one last round robin group match against the CBN Futures, have got the second semi-final spot from the White Group.

Team Tombim has already secured a semi- final place as leaders of the Blue Group. The final semifinal place will be decided in a winner-takes-all tie between Team Offikwu and Team Lead Way of Lagos tomorrow and Wednesday in Kaduna.
