Why we are hosting E1 Lagos GP — Lagos govt

Lagos State government has said that it is hosting the E1 Lagos GP, a water sport, to further put Lagos positively on the global map.

The Deputy Chief of Staff to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Sam Egube, and the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, stated this on Friday during a media immersion programme.

Omotoso noted that E1 Lagos GP is a global event which will put Lagos on the global map, stating that it is the first time the sport will be coming to Africa, and Lagos is proud to host it.

According to him, E1 Lagos GP is about innovation, resilience, and all the things Lagos is known for. He added that the water sport reflects all the things that Sanwo-Olu has been encouraging and what people see, which often makes them tell others, “This is Lagos,” in their interactions and engagements.

Omotoso said Sanwo-Olu sees E1 Lagos GP as an opportunity to tell the Lagos story, especially as Lagos is a land of opportunities. He disclosed that almost 450 enthusiasts of the water sport will be coming to Nigeria.

Also, Egube said Lagos, as a city-state, has a vision, which is to be Africa’s model city that is a global economic hub that is safe.

He added that when Lagos is mentioned, it should be talked about as a leading place for culture, entertainment, tourism, finance, and technology, and the E1 Lagos GP aligns with the goal.

According to Egube, when Sanwo-Olu declared for a second term, he said his agenda would be “theme plus.” He said E1 Lagos GP reflects the “theme plus” agenda of the governor.

He also acknowledged that Lagos is the first city in Africa to host the event. He further said that it is Lagos’s right to do so for Africa, especially as its vision is to be at par with outstanding cities around the world that have hosted the water sport before.

He said that the event will not just be about a race; it is a big party coming to Lagos, saying it is tactically a flag-off of the “Dirty December.”
