Kids underscore love, compassion in a drama

The children of Ocean Crest School, Lekki recently emphasised the need to make the world a better place by showing compassion and love to others, thereby making life worthwhile. This need has indeed become crucial, especially now that there is so much misery and bleakness in the society.

The students delivered this message through a stage drama: The Merchant Of Venice at their school premises. The play is one of the popular works of William Shakespeare, an English writer. The story is about Antonio, a wealthy Venetian merchant and his friend, Bassanio. Antonio takes a loan from a Jew, Shylock to give to Bassanio, who wants to court Portia, a wealthy heiress.

Antonio is unable to repay the loan, and without mercy, Shylock demands a pound of his flesh. But Portia, now the wife of Antonio’s friend, dresses as a lawyer and saves Antonio. Invited guests, comprising mainly parents and friends of the school, were treated to an exciting time, as the children displayed their ability to completely interpret and skilfully deliver their roles.

But it was not just the children’s acting skills that gave the play a good mention, the bright and well-tailored native costumes also added colour to the event. The rich African cultural heritage was on full display.Since it was an African adaptation of the story, the actors had to dress accordingly, as well as give traditional touch, not just to the settings, but also to fitting names and general impression.

This they did successfully, making it possible for the audience to easily follow and grasp the essence of the drama. The actors also flow seamlessly from one scene to the other, thereby making the whole presentation captivating from the beginning to the end. This is not the first time the children would engage in such venture. It is a yearly custom for the school to organise a drama, usually one that imparts lots of values to adults and children alike.
